While I’m pretty sure I have less than ten followers on my blog, I still feel compelled to scream out into the interverse (I just made that word up) my newfound-love for the Wine Face podcast. For the past two months, I’ve been cramming as much wine knowledge into my skull as humanly possible, but it wasn’t until my hour and a half drive to Napa to take my Level 1 WSET exam that I happened upon Wine Face. Helen Johannesen has a knack for talking and thinking about wines in a way that is disarming and inviting. She’s super engaging and not afraid of dropping the occasional F-bomb which for me, makes learning super fucking relatable.
During the drive to my exam, there were a few choice topics that I was feeling unsure about yet in just 75 minutes of listening to Helen, I went in armed with so much more confidence and optimism. I’m the type of person who learns by osmosis and who tends to forget most of the text I’ve read when delivered in technical format.
Helen hosts interesting guests on the show every week, and has a way with teaching that is super effective. She talks about the wine, what to pair it with, how it makes you feel and reiterates the technical points at least twice more during each recording.
I’m not sure who will see this, but my hope is that anyone looking to dive deeper into wine for personal or professional reasons will give a listen to Wine Face. It’s really that good.
Helen, if you’re reading this, I look forward to listening to future episodes and I especially look forward to paying Helen’s Wines a visit in the not-so-distant future.
